Traveling with jewelry?

It’s that time of the year, that long awaited moment where you are about to take off on a vacation and you start to wonder; should I pack any jewelry and if so, what or how?

Let’s remember that vacations are a time to relax and enjoy a break from our daily lives, so keeping it simple and light is important. If you are afraid to loose a particular item the rule of thumb is to leave it home.

The first thing you should consider is where you are traveling to. Your selection of jewelry should be appropriate for the type of activities you are planning or expect to take part in. Also keep in mind to what part of the world you are traveling to; some destinations unfortunately have more crime so avoid taking flashy items if you know you are headed in such direction. Stick to trendy items that stand out just enough to complement your outfit without overdoing it. If you think all your jewelry is too flashy then we have great news… It’s time to buy some jewels!

Now, if you have an engagement ring or eternity band, keep in mind the above tips and decide if it’s worth taking them with you. Most of the times it is best to leave engagement ring at home, you can wear your wedding band if it is not flashier than your engagement ring. Now, if you must wear an engagement ring, consider wearing a small zircon or crystal they look very similar at a fraction of the cost.

Next, make a selection of the items you are taking with you. Try not to take many regardless of the length of your trip as it may become harder to keep track of more jewelry. If you are taking fine jewelry, check if they are covered under your insurance policy, if they are not, it might be a good time to add them.

Now it’s time to pack. If you travel frequently we recommend purchasing a travel jewelry case. It does not have to be expensive and they come in different sizes and are very practical. It will help avoid mixing up your earrings, tangling chains and scratching your rings.

If you want to keep it simple you can use some of the following tools:

Straws: By slipping on side of the necklace chain through a straw you will keep the chain untangled.
Index cards: Open a whole in an index card and insert your earrings. Then simply wrap them in some cloth.
Buttons: Using spare buttons, you can pair your earrings through the holes and seal the backs.
Pill Box: The 7 day pillboxes are a great alternative to packing rings, bracelets and small necklaces.
Small sealable cups: If you are taking larger items, this cups are perfect. Just wrap your pieces in a cloth and seal them inside the container.
Jewelry pouch: On many occasion when you buy jewelry, it is packed in some type of a pouch. These are great for traveling as they are small, flexible and smooth.

Once you are done you can place your pieces in your suitcase or bulk them into a zip lock bag to keep them all together.

Last but not least, when in you are in a hotel, store your valuables in the safe and when traveling on a plane keep your valuables in your carry-on bags.

Enjoy your trip!
